Laugh at yourself....

How many times have you heard your kids say..."they're laughing at me, make them stop!" It isn't fun being laughed at when "you" don't think it's funny or you're embarrassed.

There is a solution: Learn to laugh at yourself! All the time we tell the kids that if someone laughs at you...laugh with them. It will take away the power they have over you.

One of my favorite quotes by Eleanor Roosevelt goes like this:

"No one can make you feel
inferior without your consent"

I remember once when I was in high school a "cool" guy fell going up the stairs and I began laughing to myself. He jumped up and immediately began looking around to see if anyone saw him fall...at that moment I fell going up the stairs. I was so embarrassed. Within seconds I began uncontrollably laughing while I was still on the ground with my books, papers and purse sprawled all over the place. I went to a large school so there were lots of people who witnessed my graceful pursuit up the stairs. It was infectious...everyone was laughing. Instead of this event in my teenage life becoming a memory of humiliation...it became one that still brings a smile to my face.
"He who laughs first at himself, survives humiliation"
~ Jennifer
Now I have a quote out there in the world wide web!
So learn to laugh at yourself. Don't take things so seriously. It is a lot more enjoyable to laugh than to run away in embarrasment. Find something to laugh at everyday...it is healthy too!

Here are a few more fun quotes about laughter:

"Inviting people to laugh with you while you are laughing at
yourself is a good thing to do. You may be the fool, but you're the fool in charge." ~ Carl Reiner

"Laugh at yourself first, before anyone else can." ~ Elsa Maxwell

"Laughter is inner jogging." ~ Norman Cousins

  3. Jenn, you are too funny! I should have some rock hard abs by now because I have laughed so hard at my kids. Brett has teased me for years at my laughing at the kids. He says it doesn't matter what they do, I will laugh at it.

  5. Jennifer,

Thank you for visiting my blog and for telling me about the 4-ingredient fajita spice mix. We really like the version I found, which I make in bulk, but I will give this a try sometime. We don't have a cast iron skillet, however!

I love this blog! The story of my life....laughing at myself! I think that I have eaten my foot more times than I can count! And funny about falling up the stairs - my story: at my H.S. graduation, I tripped up the stairs in front of everyone! Too funny considering my friend behind me had just whispered in my ear, "Don't trip or anything!". Yes, I laughed at myself and in doing so, everyone attending graduation joined in when they knew that I wasn't going to cry...

  7. Thank you Stephania! I am glad someone enjoys my babbling LOL! I can just see you tripping and then hearing the laughter that came after they knew you weren't going to fall apart. I really enjoy a good laugh...you know those that are hard to stop...tears streaming from your eyes. The sad part is that it usually involves my husband...it is a good thing he likes to laugh too! Hugs to you ~
